The Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi Gallery in Florence is one of the most important museums in the world.
The collection dates back to 1560 when Cosimo I de’ Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari to construct a large palazzo to house the Florentine state offices (uffizi). Five years later Vasari built the corridor which runs from the Uffizi, over the Ponte Vecchio and the Santa Felicita church to the Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti.
The Medici were always private art collectors but it was Francesco I who built a small octagonal gallery inside the Uffizi building to accomodate the works the family had amassed. Today the Gallery is home to a huge artistic heritage, which includes thousands of paintings from the medieval period to the modern age, as well as many classical sculptures, miniatures, cameos, books, coins and pieces of armour. In 1769 Pietro Leopoldo reorganised the museum and opened it to the public.
Our tour, with a specialist guide, lasts two hours.
As well as seeing the most important works, there is ample opportunity to concentrate on artists or periods that particularly interest you - and our guides won’t let you forget to step onto the museum terrace to take some photographs of the magnificent view.
